As first reported on Matzav Status, LBA founder Shimon Friedman announced last night that the frum sports league in Lakewood, NJ is assisting its head umpire Carlos in paying for his medical bills as he deals with a serious illness.
The reaction of an emotional Carlos said it all, tears expressing his appreciation to his Jewish counterparts.

  1. While it is certainly a deed which potentially will have many positive affects, Jewish counterparts? We are nobody’s counterparts!

  2. While it is certainly a deed which potentially will have many positive affects, the idea of a “Frum Sports League” seems a bit of an oxymoron. Exercise? FOR SURE! A friendly game among friends? WHY NOT? But . . .

A Frum Sports League? Our “Jewish counterparts?”

We are nobody’s counterparts and we not only don’t HAVE to have everything “they” have, we are not even supposed to.

Has all this been made possible because we view our daf shiur, our minyan factories, our morning kollelim, our shuls, and Yeshivos, and our mosdos of Chesed as boxes checked, chovos paid off?

An eved is an eved 24/7. There is no down time, no chill’n. Everything we do can and should, indeed must, be used in the service of HaShem.

  3. And all the chesed Yisroel does with Yisroel does not even more rightfully deserve an article with the title Ashreichem Yisroel?

Just to name a few: Tomchei Shabbos, Shomrim, Chaveirim, Chesed 24/7, Bikur Cholim, tuition assistance, Misaskim, Shuvu, Ratzaad, Oorah, Be’er HaGolah, Sinai Academy, Project Inspire, Partners in Torah, Torah Mates, Torah Links, Parlor Meetings, and the greatest chesed of all, Limud HaTorah!

Of all of these we pick a “chesed” done to a non-Jew which came about due to a group of fine Yidden copying non-Jews to show how special we are?

Ironic to show we are different by showing how much alike we want to be.

And yes – @nameless – I am not signing my name. There is no need to. Everything I am saying are divarim peshutim, halachos pesukos, a stam mishnah, so to speak.

Feel free to ask any Rov – your Rov – to learn with you the halachos of Kiddush HaShem (when and to whom they apply), the halachos of chesed (the list – in order – of priority), and the halachos of chukas akum. If what you find out is very different than what I am suggesting, I will be happy to have a name-to-name discussion with you.
