On Sunday night in Yerushalayim, five people were arrested following clashes between police officers and chareidi protesters demonstrating against the Supreme Court’s decision on chareidi conscription into the military.

The scene erupted in disturbances, with incidents such as rocks being hurled at officers, trash cans and infrastructure set ablaze, and vocal protests directed at law enforcement.

During the protest, Housing Minister Yitzchok Goldknopf’s vehicle was targeted with rocks, and later, former Minister Yaakov Litzman’s car was also attacked in the Romema neighborhood.

Law enforcement, including police and Border Police officers, apprehended five suspects: two for assaulting police officers and three others for throwing rocks and projectiles.

All arrested individuals were taken in for questioning by authorities.

Police reported several injuries among their ranks from the rock and projectile throwing, including a female officer with minor head injuries and another officer wounded in the leg.

By midnight, all roads previously closed during the protests were reopened to traffic.

In response to the unrest, Commander Shlomi Tobul of the Lev HaBira station stated, “At a certain point, the protest escalated into violent disturbances involving hundreds of disruptors. Over the past hours, police and security forces in the area faced a barrage of rocks, projectiles, planks, and other items. When the protest turned violent, we issued orders to disperse. When these orders were disregarded, and violence persisted with objects thrown at our forces and fires set, we had to intervene forcefully and utilize riot control measures to restore order.”

Commander Tobul also noted a troubling trend: “It’s alarming that a significant portion of those involved were children—some possibly below the age of criminal responsibility. This isn’t the first time we’ve encountered children at the forefront of disturbances in this area. This is a dangerous and concerning phenomenon that needs to be addressed and halted.”

“The individuals who targeted police officers and a government minister tonight, defied orders, and engaged in violent behavior have cast a dark shadow over the entire chareidi community with their reckless actions,” Tobul added.

“We take acts of violence against police and Border Police officers very seriously. While we respect the right to protest within the bounds of the law, tonight’s events in Yerushalayim crossed into unacceptable violence and chaos,” he concluded.
