Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin have issued a stark warning to the Western nations, pledging to establish a “New World Order.” North Korea has declared an agreement to enhance strategic and tactical collaboration with Russia, forming a united front against the United States.
According to a statement from the North Korean Foreign Ministry, both countries have agreed to deepen their strategic and tactical cooperation, aiming to safeguard their core interests and establish a “new multi-polarized international order.” The government body emphasized Putin’s intention to visit Pyongyang, indicating that the visit could happen in the near future. This development follows meetings between North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and Russian President Putin, as well as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow last week.
North Korea has been actively strengthening its ties with Russia, particularly after Kim Jong-un’s summit with Putin in September. Despite diplomatic isolation, Kim, openly supporting Putin’s actions in Ukraine, seeks to regain influence amid a deteriorating nuclear stalemate with Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo.
The North’s Foreign Ministry expressed “serious concern” over the expanding military cooperation between the US and its Asian allies, blaming it for escalating tensions in the region and posing threats to North Korea’s sovereignty and security interests. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have reached a new high, with Kim using Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a distraction to intensify weapons tests and military demonstrations.
In response, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have strengthened joint military exercises, viewed by Kim as invasion rehearsals. The trio is also enhancing deterrence plans involving nuclear-capable US assets. Putin’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, had previously warned of a potential new world order, asserting that the era of “global domination” by the West is over.
During a significant press conference, Lavrov blamed the West for initiating a “war” against Russia and claimed that Moscow and its allies have now “surpassed” NATO on the world stage. He spoke of the disintegration of Russia’s relations with the West, the increasing nuclear risks, and the current “hostile” global context. Lavrov heralded a new era of geopolitics, citing the rise of centers of economic growth, financial power, and political influence that surpass the US and other Western countries.
While not specifying the countries involved, Lavrov celebrated a “golden period” in China-Russian relations. Russian MP Alexander Osovtsov argued that World War Three has already begun for the West’s enemies, encompassing the conflicts in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict as interconnected parts of the same war.
Osovtsov contended that World War Three started nearly two years ago with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. He highlighted that the war is being fought on two military theaters – Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Simultaneously, Baltic states are fortifying defenses on their borders with Russia and Belarus, anticipating a full-scale war in Europe.
NATO’s Chief of Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, called on the West to prepare for an era of war, emphasizing the need for a “warfighting transformation” within the alliance. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have agreed to construct bunkers on their borders with Russia and Belarus to protect against potential attacks, acknowledging their vulnerability as NATO and EU members sharing borders with Russia and its ally Belarus.
