Under pressure from the US, Israel is planning to increase the supply of electricity at a Gaza desalination plant to produce more water for the people of Gaza, according to a Reuters report on Wednesday.

According to the report, Israel plans to directly supply the electricity to a large water desalination facility in Khan Yunis.

That plant was established with United Nations funding in 2017 to provide drinking water to areas in Deir al-Balah, Khan Yunis and the Mawasi area, where many Gazans have fled due to fighting.

The desalination plant can produce about 20,000 cubic meters of water per day, but only produces about 1,500 currently due to a lack of electricity.

An Israeli source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the planned supply of electricity to the water plant could provide water for just under a million people. They did not provide a timeline for when this would take place.

According to the report, the plan has been approved by both the Israeli prime minister and the Israeli minister of defense but still requires approval from other ministers in the government, with some in the government not approving of the plan.

The Israeli prime minister’s office declined a request for comment.

  1. For free paid by Israeli citizens just like they get electricity for free while Israelis pay for their electricity as well as for their own electricity an arm and a leg.
