Israel has 158,000 empty apartments, a Central Bureau of Statistics official told a Knesset committee.

Israeli economist Manuel Trajtenberg said that despite the establishment of a committee to deal with the problem in 2011, no progress was made. Israel needs 50,000 new apartments a year to keep up with growing demand, he added.
