akiva shacharIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of habochur Akiva Shachar z”l, who was 17 years old.

Akiva, a talmid of Yeshivas Kinyanei Hatorah and a resident of Tel Tzion, was swimming on the shore of Ashdod when he got swept away by the water and began drifting.

Akiva was a son of Rav Meir Shachar. His younger brother was present on the beach when Akiva drowned.

A bus of yeshiva bochurim from Yerushalayim had traveled to the Ashdod beach today for the boys to go swimming. At 7:08 p.m., the Magen Dovid Adom center received a report that one of the boys was drowning in the water. The bochurim and other swimmers tried their best to get to Akiva and they alerted rescue forces.

After a while, they succeeded in getting him out of the water, and teams of MDA and Zaka personnel conducted advanced resuscitation efforts to try and save his life. Akiva’s friends watched and davened silently.

After a long period of time of the paramedics working on Akiva, a doctor confirmed that he had passed on.

Adi Ben Chamu, the Ashdod municipal spokesman, said that currently, beaches close at 6 p.m., more than an hour before the tragedy occurred.

This is the second such tragedy in about a week. Last week, habochur Shalom Mari z”l of Ramat Shlomo, Yerushalayim, drowned in Beit Zayit. He was a talmid of Yeshivas Lev Eliyohu in Ramat Shlomo.

Akiva’s levaya will take place at midnight at Bais Medrash Bnei Torah at 16 Rechov Ahavas Emes in Tel Tzion, followed by kevurah at the Kochav Yaakov Bais Hachaim.

Yehi zichro boruch.
