Army: Bergdahl May Face Desertion Charge

bowe-bergdahl1Bowe Bergdahl isn’t home free yet. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey said today, Erev Yom Tov, that the Army may pursue an investigation that could lead to desertion charges against Bergdahl.

On Monday, Nathan Bradley Bethea, who served in the same battalion as Bergdahl, wrote that Bergdahl was a deserter who cost the lives of soldiers who died searching for him.

Dempsey acknowledged that military officials “have been accused of looking away from misconduct” but “it’s premature” to assume they will not vigilantly investigate the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s disappearance and subsequent capture by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Dempsey also said Bergdahl’s next military promotion was not automatic because he is no longer missing in action. Read more.
