Aryeh Deri Said To Head Shas List, With Yishai To Be Top Minister

deriReports indicate that R’ Aryeh Deri will be the head of the Shas party’s list for the upcoming Knesset elections, while chairman and Interior Minister Eli Yishai will keep the party’s most senior ministerial post.

The reported deal seems to be a compromise to an internal power struggle between the two politicians, as Deri and Yishai both eye the party’s leadership. Deri reportedly threatened to run with a new party if he was not reinstated as Shas chairman.

Deri is seen as a potential vote-winner for Shas.

Chacham Ovadia Yosef has not formally announced the arrangement. However, Channel 2 News reported on Monday night that senior Shas officials said that Deri would retake the party’s chairmanship.

The Moroccan-born Deri, 53, served as interior minister for several years until 1993.
