As Rav Weissmandel Leaves Agri-Star, Lubavitcher Hashgacha Remains

hershey-friedmanDespite the removal of Rav Menachem Meir Weissmandl’s supervision, Crown Heights Kashrus is not breaking ties with AgriStar plant, Rabbi Berel Levertov has said. The removal of the supervision given to AgriStar poultry and meat plant in Postville, Iowa, by Rav Weissmandel has put the Kosher industry in a frenzy.

Rav Weissmandl, head of the Nitra community in Monsey, terminated his hashgacha in a public letter this past Wednesday.

“As of this Friday, Erev Shabbos Parshas Mishpatim, my kosher certification will no longer be in force and I take no further responsibly for its kashrus. The public should take note,” he wrote.

Those include products that are packaged under the “Aaron’s Best,” “Supreme Kosher” and “Agri Star” labels.

The company, founded by the Rubashkin family, is now owned by Hershey Friedman (seen in photo), president of Montreal-based Polystar plastic packaging.

But CHK – Vaad Hakashrus of Crown Heights said Friday their certification on the Shor Habor label by AgriStar remains the same.

“No changes have been made, since there are no kashrus problems,” Rabbi Berel Levertov, Kashrus Coordinator for CHK, wrote in a letter on Friday.

“It seems that another hechsher will be replacing Rav Weissmandl (and this is the only reason for the change),” he explained.

He said that Shor Habor products are per the guidelines set by Rabbi Avraham Osdoba and the late Rabbi Kalman Yehuda Marlow z”l.

“Those who eat Aaron’s Best or Supreme Kosher have to reexamine their standards if they will continue to eat OU glatt without a chareidi hechsher,” Rabbi Levertov said.

CHK also provides supervision to David Elliot, Wise organic, Heartland kosher and Ezra.

  1. Can sonmeone please explain what standars are diferent by ou than the heimiesh hechsehers like R weissmandel who just left. What exactly will bedifferent. Is ou chopped liver?

  2. “Those who eat Aaron’s Best or Supreme Kosher have to reexamine their standards if they will continue to eat OU glatt without a chareidi hechsher,” Rabbi Levertov said.
    _________

    What does that mean??

  3. I hate every time I see a letter from a Rav Hamachshir stating that he’s removing his Hechsher and buyer beware. It sounds like he’s removing his Hechsher because of Kashrus concerns. The fact is that the owner wants a different Rav Hamachsir and it has nothing to do with the quality of Kashrus. I believe these letters of “removal of Hechsher” are misleading

  4. Rav Weissmandl was one of three hashgachos. The fact is that the company changed ownership and therefore he as no responsibility to continue giving his hechsher.

  5. ““Those who eat Aaron’s Best or Supreme Kosher have to reexamine their standards if they will continue to eat OU glatt without a chareidi hechsher,” Rabbi Levertov said.

Personally, my standards are that I eat OU glatt despite the fact that it has a Chariedi Hechsher.

The Chumras and extra lines that Cheriedi groups take to insure Kosher at the highest standards dont lower the OU yet one should really look into what the difference is before making a rounded statement. Very special; the extra care for the minhagim and details..
