A chareidi girl from Elad recently traveling with friends to vacation in Barcelona, Spain, was shocked when police at Ben Gurion Airport arrested her on the charge that she had never received IDF deferment and was a deserter. The court handling her case considered keeping her imprisoned over Shabbos but was persuaded to release her to house arrest on a 2,000 shekel bail. It turned out that although she had twice sent the army a declaration that she was chareidi and exempt from the draft, the army had never processed her application and registered her as a deserter.
The girls’ lawyer explained to the court, “She claims that she sent the first [declaration that she was chareidi] together with all her friends. She was absolutely shocked that… [she] got arrested at Ben Gurion Airport.”
