Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith emerged victorious Tuesday night in the Mississippi Senate runoff, easily fending off Democrat Mike Espy in the deeply conservative Magnolia State.
With 97 percent of the vote counted, Ms. Hyde-Smith led Mr. Espy by almost eight percentage points, getting 53.9 percent of the vote to 46.1 percent.
The Hyde-Smith victory was in line with most of the pre-runoff public polls despite public outcry after Hyde-Smith said she would attend a “public hanging.”
