Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon blasted Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday, saying that he has “led his people down a path of self-destruction and misery.”

“Mahmoud Abbas is to blame,” the ambassador said at the monthly U.N. Security Council meeting on the Middle East. “In his 13 years of rule, Abbas has done nothing but inspire this rampant culture of hate. … He preaches tolerance in English and terror in Arabic. … He has led his people down a path of self-destruction and misery, stealing their chance at a good life. He is the obstacle to peace. If you hope to see a better future between Israelis and Palestinians, you will join us in indicting Abbas.”

During the session, Danon displayed an official Palestinian Authority textbook that Abbas authorized for the current academic year, explaining that “this textbook lists a number of so-called heroes, like Dalal Mughrabi, the terrorist responsible for a massacre that killed 38 people. This is Abbas’s culture of hate—right in front of you. This is the reason Palestinian schoolchildren learn that it is better to kill a Jew than keep a job.”

Also speaking the meeting was Hagai El-Ad, CEO of the anti-Israeli army group B’Tselem.

“It is very difficult, if not impossible, to fully convey the indignity, the outrage and the pain of a people denied the benefit of human rights for more than 50 years,” he said. “It is hard to articulate the flesh and blood meaning of the exposed lives Palestinians endure under occupation.”

“But no matter how hard it is to describe, the real hardship is that of facing such an intolerable existence day in and day out, trying to live, raise a family and develop a community under these conditions,” added El-Ad.

Both Netanyahu and Danon labeled the invitation for El-Ad as a “disgrace.”

“B’Tselem has proven time and again that it collaborates with Israel’s enemies,” Danon said in a statement.

He added that El-Ad has “joined those on the council who oppose Israel’s right to exist. The people who invited him are the ones who call IDF soldiers ‘murderers.’ Accepting the invitation is not just a shameful act, but a crossing of all red lines, as El-Ad joins with countries that have an anti-Israel agenda. It is these countries that are funding El-Ad’s trip, so he can give his ‘testimony.’ ”

Im Tirtzu CEO Matan Peleg echoed Danon’s criticism.

“The B’Tselem CEO’s call to the nations of the world to act against Israel is a subversive and fundamentally undemocratic act,” said Peleg.

“This slanderous speech given at the encouragement of B’Tselem’s foreign government patrons is an affront to the Israeli public,” he continued. “And the State of Israel needs to reject all organizations that work from within against the state and its people. This includes taxing the tremendous budgets that these NGOs receive from foreign governments.

“The Israeli public,” affirmed Peleg, “should not subsidize those working to destroy it.”
