Chief Rabbis Yitzchak Yosef and Dovid Lau wrote to Minister Yovel Steinitz urging him to expedite the appointment of new dayonim for state botei din. With only three hundred dayonim, Israel will soon be eighteen dayonim short, despite the appointment of twenty-two new dayonim two years ago.

“The non-appointment of dayonim is causing delays and making women agunos,” they wrote.

The Movement for a Jewish and Democratic State informed ministers that it would submit a class action suit unless the matter was attended to immediately.

  1. Rav Shechter from YU in an interview in Ami said “It’s worse than a crisis. They tell me that there is a prominent talmid chacham in Flatbush who tells his baalei battim to go to a secular court because they stand a better chance of yoshor [justice] in a goyishe [non-Jewish] court than in a din Torah. If you ask him, he’ll deny it, but that’s what he tells people. Unfortunately, I think that the comment about yoshor is true.” From what i hear the beit din in Israel is not much better.
