Sanmay VedJust think about how would you reach if you get lucky to own search engine giant Google even for a minute? Well, ex-Google employee Sanmay Ved considers himself fortunate enough to own the domain for a minute.

While Sanmay was learning more about the Google Domains interface on September 29, a strange thing took place at about 1:20 am as per Eastern Time. He was surprised to see that Google.com was showing as available!

In a LinkedIn post, Sanmay stated that he was amazed to see a happy green face next to the domain name that indicated that the Google.com was ready for purchase.

He thought that perhaps an error might take place, but the purchasing process was successfully completed.

Then, Sanmay received two emails from Google, one from [email protected] and another from [email protected], which usually doesn’t take place when you book domains via Google Domains. He further explained, “Additionally, my Google Search Console (aka Google Webmaster Tools) was auto-updated with webmaster related messages for the Google.com domain which actually means ownership was transferred to me.”

Sanmay, who has reported the incident to Google Security, stated that “Google has reverted, and has acknowledged the incident.”

This error hasn’t happened for the first time. In 2013, Microsoft forgot to renew the Hotmail UK domain registered with Nominet UK; as a result, the domain was once again available in the open market for purchase by anyone. And as Microsoft wasn’t the registrar, the company couldn’t cancel or retract it once the domain was picked up by someone else.
