A Gaza man is being held on suspicion he bludgeoned his daughter to death with an iron chain because he discovered she owned a cell phone, human rights groups said today. The groups added that the victim’s three brothers were also detained. The woman, a 27-year-old divorced mother of five, was the 10th victim of a so-called “honor killing” in the Palestinian territories and among Arabs in Israel this year.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the man had turned himself in, but did not provide further details, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.
Human rights groups said the man believed his daughter used the cell phone to speak to a man outside the family.
They added that she was beaten so severely she suffered a cracked skull.
