Nearly half of all 6.5 million Syrians are displaced as a result of having “been forced to abandon their homes and flee for their lives,” according to a new United Nations report.
The report also notes that there are 3 million Syrian refugees registered in other countries, which is 1 million more than the previous year. The host governments of these countries estimate that thousands more Syrians live within their borders, but haven’t formally registered.
“The Syrian crisis has become the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era, yet the world is failing to meet the needs of refugees and the countries hosting them,” said U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres. Read more.
