Immigrants To Israel Can Now Turn In Foreign Driver’s License For Israeli One Without Retaking Road Test

Advocacy with the Israeli Ministry of Transport has born fruit and now new immigrants and returning residents with foreign driver’s licenses will be able to immediately convert their foreign licenses to Israeli ones.
The Ministry of Transport recently announced a revolution in easing its regulations that will be implemented in two months. The leniencies they mentioned include allowing new immigrants and returning residents to convert their foreign license to an Israeli driver’s license without the need for a driver’s test — conditional on them having a valid driver’s license from their country of origin for at least five years. Until now, they were subject to onerous and expensive mandates requiring even veteran drivers with years of experience to take driving lessons if they wanted to move to Israel and continue driving.
Observers has often criticized the absurdity of the stringent Israeli regulations requiring long-time drivers to take driving lessons to obtain their license, when driving is a basic skill obtained by most people in their youth and which they utilize almost every day of their life.
The new regulation also extends the validity of a foreign worker’s driver’s license for a period of up to five years, subject to the validity of his Israeli residence permit.
