Israeli Sentenced To 10 Years For JCC Bomb Threats

The Tel Aviv District Court sentenced a 20-year-old hacker from Israel’s southern city of Ashkelon to 10 years in prison after being convicted of calling in fake bomb threats to over 2,000 institutions and targets all over the world, including Jewish community centers, airlines, police stations and even a professional basketball team’s plane.

While the defendant — who was diagnosed with a brain tumor and falls on the autism spectrum — has been identified by the US Justice Department, Israeli courts refer to him as “M.”, since he was tried as a minor.

Justice Zvi Gurfinkel acknowledged M. as autistic, but the ruling said he “has a high IQ and understands his deeds very well,” following the testimony of three psychiatrists suggesting the defendant could differentiate between right and wrong.

“If not for his medical condition, the defendant would have received a much longer sentence,” said the ruling from the Tel Aviv district court
