In 1959, a rov in Moscow handed a leather valise to American Dr. Max Leopold Brodny, telling him, “It has no future here.” Inside were 76 kemei’os and a book of segulos.

Brodny’s daughter, Eleanor Coe, recently donated the collection to the National Library of Israel.

Library officials say that most of the kemi’os were prepared in North Africa over a century ago for a variety of purposes, such as to protect women in childbirth or shield against ayin hora. Some materials and herbs in the manuscript are connected with treatments still prescribed today.
