Move over traditional doughnuts, here comes the new 2013, reinvented and totally terrific alternative to the jelly doughnut. Now, if you are a traditionalist, by all means, make or buy some jelly doughnuts, but try these too (some are super simple and semi-homemade) and see how much more fun doughnut making and eating can be!

Oreo Stuffed Doughnuts

My friend, Naomi Nachman, gave me this recipe a few years ago and it’s a favorite on Hanukah.

Doughnut dough (or buy pizza dough) (store bought pizza dough or homemade dough)

15 pareve chocolate sandwich cookies or Oreo cookies

Vegetable oil for frying

Powdered sugar

Pull off a two-inch piece of pizza dough.  Roll into a ball with your hands and then flatten a bit.  Place an oreo cookie in the center and wrap dough around the oreo cookies.  Use all the dough (it should make about 12- 15 doughnuts).

Heat oil in large stock pot or in deeper fryer to about 375 degrees. Fry doughnuts for about 1-2 minutes each side. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve immediately.

Doughnut Pops

So easy and so much fun.

12 mini doughnuts or regular doughnuts

Chocolate for dipping or melting chocolate

12 lollypop sticks (these work better than popsicle sticks)

Sprinkles or other decorative toppings

Take any size doughnuts, but I prefer the mini size. Freeze for 20 minutes. Melt chocolate or melting chocolate over low flame, stirring until melted and smooth. Dip doughnuts in chocolate and then in decorative toppings.  Add the lollypop stick and place in the refrigerator until chocolate has hardened.

Doughnut Ice Cream Sandwich

The ultimate in decadence but super fun for kids anytime but especially during Hanukah. Be careful, the adults love them too.

12 chocolate covered doughnuts (or minis) of your choice, store bought Entemanns work best with this as the doughnuts hold up better to slicing

Ice cream flavor of your choice, I recommend coffee for adults, cookies and cream for kids

Split chocolate covered doughnuts in half crosswise. Spoon mini scoops of ice cream onto the bottom half of the doughnut ring leaving keeping the hole empty. Top with the other half of the doughnut.

Simple Zepolles

the-world_s-top-10-most-amazing-doughnuts-4Zepolles are made with pizza dough and are super easy, especially if you buy the dough from your local pizza shop.

1 package store bought pizza dough

Oil for frying

Powdered sugar

Heat oil in a large stock pot to 375 degrees. Pinch off the dough in 2 tablespoons-size balls and drop into the hot oil (I roll it out into a thick log – like for challah braiding, and then cut off two-inch pieces). Fry until golden brown – 3 to 4 minutes. Roll immediately in a generous amount of powdered sugar. You can inject jelly into them but they are great as is!
