McCain to Trump: Stop Aiding World Dictators With ‘Fake News’ Attacks

18

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Tuesday called out President Trump for his “unrelenting attacks” on the press in an op-ed for The Washington Post, saying he’s aiding dictators worldwide by putting the crosshairs on journalists.

“Whether Trump knows it or not,” McCain wrote, his constant cry of “fake news” directed at “reporters and news outlets whose coverage he disagrees with” is being used by repressive regimes to crack down on the media. Referencing a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, McCain noted that 21 instances of journalists being charged for “fake news” were recorded in 2017. “The phrase ‘fake news’—granted legitimacy by an American president—is being used by autocrats to silence reporters, undermine political opponents, stave off media scrutiny and mislead citizens,” McCain wrote.

He went on to slam the Trump administration for condemning violence against journalists abroad while Trump “continues his unrelenting attacks on the integrity of American journalists and news outlets.” Read more at the WASHINGTON POST.

  1. Does Mr McCain not realize how unacceptable the medias behavior has been since Trump was elected? They pick on every last thing and do not give their elected leader any support. Are they all leftists or just jealous?

  2. No, it’s the media’s unrelenting assault on Trump that’s aiding the dictators, autocrats, and the enemies of America worldwide by delegitimizing our Presidency.

  3. Do I hear right from the first three comments above? Autocracy, fear of dreams fated new, fear of a changing national grade? We live in freedom from 1776. Not 2017 graded by 1984. The rest of the populace votes and fast can be spoken. New days and crime. You better watch all media. We must be safe.

It is a crock to list media that every new populace wants demeaned. Let the marketplace determine their worth.

I can watch what I want.

  4. The World dictators have lost respect for America the last dozens of years, with Fake News having reinforced their lack of trust in America, ESPECIALLY the last 8 years when America has become the world’s laughingstock.

  5. McCain said something? Quick, all the Hannity koolaid drinkers have to criticize him. They can’t take it that there are any respectable Republicans around, it reminds them of how sad their hero Trump (and his friends like Moore and Bannon) is.
Keep destroying true conservatism, probably the goal of Trump, a NY liberal, and finish off what Obama started.
    Thanks.

      • Sorry, but I’m not drinking. Just thinking, something that doesn’t seem to be so common anymore.
I find it interesting how all the so-called conservatives like Hannity can talk about conservative ideals for all 8 years of Obama, and then just throw it all away when Trilllion-dollar-stimulus-Trump steps in.
It’s obvious that the Hannity-Limbaugh-Bannon people hate Mccain more than they hate liberals. They don’t care about conservative values, don’t care about morality, don’t care about fiscal responsibility, all they care about is their own ratings.

    • So tax breaks are not true conservatism? 22 regulations repealed for every one passed, shrinking the government, isn’t true conservatism? Estimated shrinking the EPA by 1/2 by the end of his first term isn’t true conservatism? An originalist judge isn’t true conservatism? Mad Dog Mattis isn’t a conservative pick for SecDef? Repealing the Obamacare mandate is not true conservatism? Not everything Trump does is good or smart, and I was worried he would be liberal too, but it has turned out that most of his policy is pretty conservative.

      • “22 regulations for every one passed”. Cute way of saying that nothing has happened. If he doesn’t pass any regulations, he can still stay by his claim of 22 repealed for every 1 paased (still better than Obama passing 22 for wvery 1 repealed). Estimated shrinking the EPA? Let’s see it when it happens.
And still no repsonse about the trillion dollar stimulus.
And about healthcare- Trump is the one who was against the repeal of it left people ininsured.
So no conservative, not by any measure.
