Israeli Minister of Construction Yoav Galant has drafted a proposal calling for the yearly construction of thousands of housing units for the chareidi population.

In its introduction, the bill says that “due to the need of [housing within] the chareidi sector…it is recommended that a first stage goal of 5,000 apartments a year be established for chareidim from 2016 to 2018. After that, 6,500 apartments should be built a year for the chareidi community.”

Over the next 20 years, the bill avers, the chareidi sector will need close to 200,000 housing units.

“Due to a dearth of options,” the bill says, “the market will be looking for solutions that will include the purchasing of apartments within mixed communities and the eventual pushing out of the veteran population. This will cause social tensions, which should be prevented.”
