It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing moments ago of Mrs. Devorah (Debbie) (née Fortman) Sherer a”h. She was 93 years old.

Mrs. Sherer was the wife of the legendary emissary of the gedolei Yisroel, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, chairman of Agudas Yisroel of America who was called “the gadol hador of shtadlanus” by Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l.

Mrs. Sherer was a daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Shimshon Zelig Fortman. Rav Shimson Zelig served as rov of the White Shul, Cong. Knesset Israel, in Far Rockaway and was a highly-regarded member of the rabbinate.

In 1943, Mrs. Sherer married her husband, Reb Moshe, a son of Reb Chaim Yehuda and Basya Bluma Sherer.

Although the young and dynamic Moshe Sherer initially sought a rabbinical post, no position that appealed to him was available at that time. Therefore, he accepted an offer made by his cousin, R’ Elmelech (Mike) Tress, to work for Agudas Yisroel. The rest is history.

Mrs. Sherer was a special woman in her own right, a queen-like matriarch of a prestigious family, who demonstrated the majesty of the neshei chayil of Klal Yisroel, conducting herself with modestly, dignity and class always.

She was a pillar of support to her husband, enabling him to devote his acumen and energies for the benefit of Klal Yisroel in myriad ways. She was a partner in his avodas hakodesh, content to remain behind the scenes as her husband assumed a public persona following the guidance of the Torah leaders of the generation.

Mrs. Sherer is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. Rochel Langer of Monsey, NY, and Mrs. Elky Goldschmidt of Brooklyn, NY; and her son, Rav Shimshon Zelig Sherer, rov of Khal Zichron Mordechai of Brooklyn, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The levaya will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Shomrei Hadas Chapels, located at 3803 14th Avenue in Boro Park, Brooklyn.

Yehi zichroh boruch.
