Avi Gabbay recited a Shehecheyanu Monday upon winning the runoff to head Israel’s Labor party, saying that “this is part of our being Jews. I am Jewish and I did something which comes very naturally,” Kol Haolam reports.
Despite outgoing leader Yitzchak Herzog having endorsed his opponent, Amir Peretz, Gabbay reiterated his offer for Herzog to stay on as opposition leader — something Gabbay, who is not a member of the Knesset, cannot perform. Herzog was noncommittal.
