NYC Proposes New Minimum Age for Cigarette Sales

smokingThe New York City Council is considering upping the legal age to purchase cigarettes from 18 to 21, Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced today.

She’s counting on City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley, fellow City Council members, and health advocates to support the proposed law, despite arguments from opponents that as legal adults, 18-year-olds should be able to decide for themselves whether they want to smoke. If this proposal passes, New York would be the biggest city to ban tobacco purchases for those younger than 21.

“With this legislation, we’ll be targeting the age group at which the overwhelming majority of smokers start,” Quinn said.

  1. why do you have post a negative picture about frum people as if only gemara learning people have a problem of youngsters smoking we have enough frum bashing we dont dont need a frum website helping out

  2. You can shave according to many heiliga poskim. there are those that are chomer on themselves to never shave because some poskim hold that its assur d’araysa lchumra. limaisa you should do what your rebbe tells you. but bdi eved one can shave this friday if they have to lkavad shabbos.

  3. I thikn you’ll find that there are some poskim who do permit lift & cut. Then again – ask you LOR not a website!

What does this have to do with smoking? I feel that at minimum the Rabbonim should stick to this as well – NO ONE under 21 should smoke, and those that do should not be given any kibbudim in shul. And then each year raise the age by a year – that way eliminating smoking in the frum community.
