White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama won’t back any of the candidates in the New York City mayor’s race. Gibbs says the Democratic president doesn’t plan to make an endorsement. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is now an independent but is running on the Republican ballot line. He has been cozying up to Obama in recent months, and had his second appearance in a month at the White House today.Meanwhile, the leading Democrat, William Thompson Jr., could have used the boost from the popular president and leader of the party. He has said he wants his campaign to build grassroots support like Obama did on a national level.
