Rav Elyashiv’s Shtender Returned Month After Being Stolen

rav-elyashiv-ztlA little over a month after the members of the caravan shul located adjacent to the home of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l in Meah Shearim, Yerushalayim, were stunned when Ravhttp://matzav.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif Elyashiv’s shtender was stolen, they have now breathed a sigh of relief. The shtender has been returned.

The shtender is believed to have been used by Rav Elyashiv for decades.

Why it was taken and the details of its return haven’t been released by the family. The shtender was returned to Reb Aryeh Elyashiv, a grandson of the posek hador, and the shtender will now remain closely guarded to prevent its disappearance again.

The shtender was utilized by the posek hador for davening and to deliver his daily Gemara shiur, which was first started by his father, Rav Avrohom, who gave the shiur for over 50 years. With the petirah of Rav Elyashiv, his son, Rav Moshe, has continued the family tradition of delivering the shiur, and the shiur continues to take place at the caravan shul where the shtender was taken from. The shiur is expected to eventually be moved to the Tiferes Bachurim Bais Medrash, where Rav Elyashiv first began delivering it many decades ago.

The Yerushalayim police had been notified of the theft of the shtender and an investigation was launched.

Beyond the sentimental value, it is not clear how much the shtender would have been worth on the open market, especially since the theft was widely publicized.

That question is moot, however, with the shtender being returned to the family and bais medrash.
