Rav Shimon Yosef Edelstein zt”l, Son of Rav Gershon Edelstein

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Shimon Yosef Edelstein zt”l, a son of Rav Gershon Edelstein, rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. He was 66 years old.

Rav Shimon Yosef battled illness and experienced great yissurim. He was released from the hospital today, but then passed away at his home.

Rav Shimon Yosef was born on 22 Teves 66 years ago to his parents, Rav Gershon and Rebbetzin Rochel, a daughter of Rav Yehoshua Zelig Diskin, rov of Parislov.

In his youth, Rav Shimon Yosef learned at Ponovezh Yeshiva. After his marriage to his wife, Rivka, a daughter of Rav Gavriel Beer, the young couple settled in the Ramat Elchonon neighborhood of Bnei Brak.

Rav Shimon Yosef was known for his hasmadah and yedios haTorah. He was a fixture at the main shul in the neighborhood and at the nearby Ponovezher Kollel.

The levayah began at Rav Shimon Yosef’s home on Rechov Rav Ezra Atia and continued at the main shul in Ramat Elchonon, with Tehillim led by Rav Mordechai Shmuel Edelstein, rov of the Neos Yosef neighborhood of Bnei Brak.

Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein delivered a hesped, as did Rav Gershon Edelstein.

Kevurah took place at the Ponovezher Bais Hachaim.

Rav Shimon Yosef is survived by his wife and eleven children, as well as his siblings.

    “Born to his parents.” Really Matzav? What a silly thing to say. Everyone is born to their parents. Couldn’t you have said “Rav Shimon Yosef was a son of ….”?

    • Ty 4 ur very interesting comment & pointing that out, they always say that phrase, don’t know y, it’s the most weirdest thing ever, Seriously !!
