Rav Shteinman: Buildings Don’t Kill People, Building isn’t Cursed

aharon-leib-shteinman-3An apartment building in Yerushalayim was struck by disaster three times in the last year, when three of its inhabitants – fathers to multiple-child families, were niftar after being diagnosed with cancer. Fearing that their building might be cursed, the distraught residents turned to several leading rabbonim and gedolim in Eretz Yisroel for counsel. They were advised to begin holding shemiras halashon lessons aimed at preventing the speaking of lashon hara, which was to prevent ayin hara. In light of the chain of catastrophes, the concerned residents approached Maran Harav Aharon Leib Shteinman shlit”a and raised the possibility of moving out of the “cursed” building.

Rav Shteinman assured them that “buildings do not kill people, and so there is nothing to fear from and you may continue living there peacefully and safely.”

However, Rav Shteinman added, each of the tenants should do some soul-searching to find out why disaster struck so close to home.

Following their conversation with Harav Shteinman, the residents also consulted the Harav Menachem Fuchs, the rov in the neighborhood, and inquired how they should go about doing teshuvah and rectifying their misdeeds.

Harav Fuchs instructed them to start holding regular sedorim in shemiras halashon, and the nshei chayil of the area have already begun attending such classes once a week.

The members of the shechunah also brought a sofer down to check the mezuzos of all the apartments, but they were all found to be 100% mehudar and in mint condition.

  1. I would not want to argue with Horav Shteineman shllitoh, of course. We probably don’t know exactly what he said though. I think that the people in that building should check out whether that building has any materials that would cause cancer, if medical experts agree that this is highly possible. I seem to have read that this is indeed possible. I do not believe that Horav Shteineman would consider that wrong. However, the main thing is to carry out what he said.
