Rav Yaakov Nissan Rosenthal zt”l

rav-yaakov-nissan-rosenthalIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Yaakov Nissan Rosenthal zt”l, av bais din of Haifa. Over the past year, Rav Rosenthal had been hospitalized several times at Shaare Tzedek Medical Center in¬†Yerushalayim, and recently underwent a successful operation, but he passed away over Shabbos. Rav Rosenthal was 86. He leaves behind a generation of children and grandchildren following in his path.

Rav Rosenthal was born in the Shaarei Chesed section of Yerushalayim. His father, Rav Avrohom Dovid Rosenthal, was the rov of the neighborhood. At the age of 28, he was appointed as a dayan and later became av bais din of Haifa. Over the years, he also served as rov of Chanichei Hayeshivos and opened Kollel HaGra in Haifa, the first kollel in the city and one which attracted respected bnei Torah. Rav Rosenthal authored a number of seforim, including the Mishnas Yaakov on the Rambam.

Recently, he told his son, Rav Yisroel Rosenthal, that one thing he allows him to say after his petirah is that he never wasted a minute. He valued every moment on this world, his son recounted, utilizing it for harbotzas haTorah, chessed, and any endeavor that created kevod Shomayim.

Rav Rosenthal produced many talmidim, one of whom is the Rishon Letzion, Rav Shlomo Amar.

The levaya will take place on Sunday at the Kollel HaGra on Rechov Rabi Akiva in Haifa.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Many who read this site have never heard of him. He was without a doubt one of the greatest lamdanim and tzaddikim in this generation. He was ostracized by some(which is why he was realtively unknown) because he was suspected of having Zionist tendencies. When he admitted “guilty as charged and proud of it”, he was wiped off the board. A giant of a man whose modesty and self respect carried him through life even as some shunned him.
