Report: Chinese Hackers Stole Iron Dome Secrets

iron-dome1“KrebsOnSecurity” reports that sensitive information on Israeli systems was stolen from Rafael, IAI and Elbit.

Chinese hackers stole sensitive information from three Israeli defense manufacturers responsible for building the “Iron Dome,” security news and information website “KrebsOnSecurity” reports.

The intrusions reportedly took place in 2011 and 2012, “KrebsOnSecurity,” according to information it received from US threat intelligence firm Cyber Engineering Services Inc. The report says that between October 2011 and August 2012, Chinese attackers hacked into the corporate networks of Elbit Systems Ltd. unit Elisra, Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd..

CyberESI claims the hackers downloaded large amounts of IP about Arrow III missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and ballistic rockets. CyberESI’s CEO Joseph Drissel said the information stolen suggests that the Chinese hackers were looking for information about Iron Dome.

Elbit and Rafael declined to comment on the report. An IAI spokesperson, “brushed off CyberESI’s finding, calling it old news. When pressed to provide links to any media coverage of such a breach, IAI was unable to locate or point to specific stories. The company declined to say whether it had alerted any of its US industry partners about the breach, and it refused to answer any direct questions regarding the incident,” KrebsOnSecurity wrote. “At the time, the issue was treated as required by the applicable rules and procedures,” IAI Spokeswoman Eliana Fishler wrote in an email to KrebsOnSecurity. “The information was reported to the appropriate authorities. IAI undertook corrective actions in order to prevent such incidents in the future.”
