Schabas: Israel Would Object If ‘Spiderman’ Led U.N. Probe

prof-william-schabasCanadian professor William Schabas, whose ability to judge Israel fairly as the lead United Nations Human Rights Council investigator of Operation Protective Edge has been heavily questioned, said that Israel’s opposition to the U.N. appointment would have been the same no matter who was chosen for the role.

Israel would object “even if Spiderman was heading the commission,” Schabas told the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

“I will not resign. I do not hate Israel. I will put my prior positions aside,” he said.

In the past, Schabas has called for Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and former president Shimon Peres to be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court for human rights violations. Given Schabas’s history, the Israeli government has called the current U.N. probe a “kangaroo court.”

  1. From the quality of the response we can judge the level of his intelligence.Perhaps Siderman would be better choice to investigate the matter than a Jew who cant even spell Shabbos right

  2. So let’s understand what he is saying. The comic book character Spiderman would not be acceptable to Israel. This he sees as ridiculous of Israel.

Is he saying Spiderman has more credibility than he does? OK.

  3. “I will put my prior positions aside,” he said.”

If he was a judge, he would have to recuse himself, and such a declaration would not suffice, correct?

  4. An impartial observer would have to question why is the UNHRC only looking at only party when indications are that the other party would have as much or more human rights violations. The conclusion would have to be that something is amiss with the UNHRC itself. So in answer to Mr Schabas’ observation, the answer would be yes – Israel would object to Spiderman or anyone else for that role. The role is only that of being the useful idiot.
