Israeli policemen and border guards halted an Arab wheeling a small wagon through the Old City of Yerushalayim when they noticed a shark tail protruding from cartons loaded on the wagon. They were amazed to discover four small sharks concealed beneath the cartons, apparently on the way to the nearby Arab market. Because sharks are endangered and fishermen are supposed to return them to the sea, Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority personnel confiscated the animals and opened an investigation.
“The alertness of the police and soldiers in a highly congested area has led more than once to the identification of suspects as well as the discovery of incidences like this one which were immediately turned over to appropriate enforcement agencies,” a police spokesman said.
