Silvan Shalom: The Man Who Extended Rav Elyashiv’s Life By Nine Years

minister-silvan-shalomAs the shivah of Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv concluded, Minister Silvan Shalom received special kudos yesterday during his nichum aveilim visit to the Elyashiv home on Rechov Chanan in Meah Shearim.

One of Rav Elyashiv’s sons, upon seeing Mr. Shalom arrive, introduced him as the individual who was zocheh to extend Rav Elyashiv’s life by nine years.

How exactly did he do that?

Rav Elyashiv’s son told the others in the room that nine years ago, when Rav Elyashiv was deathly ill and required a surgeon to be flown from the United States, the situation was extremely complicated and certain pieces of expensive and delicate medical equipment needed to be obtained. Mr. Shalom, who was then the foreign minister of Israel, was asked if he could help, and he rapidly made all the arrangements necessary so that the surgery could be performed on Rav Elyashiv without delay.

Interestingly, after the surgery and once Rav Elyashiv had regained his strength, he asked if his family could contact Mr. Shalom. Mr. Shalom visited Rav Elyashiv’s home, and Rav Elyashiv expressed his deep appreciation ad hakoras hatov for all that Mr. Shalom had done.

Rav Elyashiv, it is known, was always extremely makpid about expressing hakoras hatov and gratitude to anyone who helped him in any way.

Thus, when he went to be menachem avel yesterday, Mr. Shalom was introduced as the man who extended Rav Elyashiv’s life by nine years.

  1. Amazing amazing Kiddush Hashem! We get all caught up, some times, with the “battle” between Chareidim & chilonim and we forget what bindes us all as the Am Hanivchor! Me keamcha Yisroel! What a Zchus Mr. Shalom has!

  2. The mark of two great men: one helped any way he could and the other was deeply appreciative. Finally an uplifting story i can learn from.

  3. Of course, Hakoras HaTov should be expressed to Mr. Shalom for his role.

However, let’s not forget that HASHEM extended the life of Rav Elyashiv ZT”L.

    Mr. Shalom was the Shaliach.

  4. i was sitting right there in r’ elyashiv zatzal’s house it was a very emotional moment when the ravs son announced that the whole room was in tears!!

  5. Do we need to reiterate on each issue, “of course it was hashem” and so and so was the shliach.

“What a terrible thunderstorm”…oh I mean the thunderstorm was a shliach sent by hashem to cause fear to people.

  6. Duh!

I bet if the person who extended Rav Elyashiv’s life for 9 years was a frum yid you would not have made such an obvious comment.

  7. To Mr. # 9 “Reb Shlomo”
Did I say anything about who said this comment?
So what if it’s a family member?
    It still doesn’t sound Jewish.

  8. How about the pilot that drove the airplane with which the surgeon flew?
    And, how about the surgeon?
    Or, the anestheologist?
    Or, the scrub nurse?
    Or, etc., etc., etc.?

  9. Mr. Silvan Shalom is a very lucky man. This is like winnig the lottery 1.000.000 times. That he was in a sitution to help to extend the life of a tsadikk !!!! can you imagine this mitzvah !!! the children of Mr. Silvan Shalom will be blessed and will have long life. Mr. Shalom himself will be blessed from shamayim. What a lucky man.
