The 12 boys trapped in a flooded Thai cave initially tried to dig their way out, and thought they were hallucinating when their rescuers finally arrived, they said in their first public comments Wednesday.
“We heard people speaking,” one of the young soccer players said at a nationally broadcast press conference shortly after being discharged from the hospital in Chiang Rai.
“We were not sure if it was a hallucination. Then we went quieter and realized it was real,” he said, according to NBC News.
“It was a miracle,” he added. “It was the first glimpse of hope.”
