Over two million people are expected to flood the streets of Lower Manhattan today for a Yankees ticker-tape parade. The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. in Battery Park City and ends at City Hall.
The sidewalks lining the parade route along Broadway from Battery Place to Chambers Street are open to members of the public.
Atlas Materials in Red Hook, Brooklyn is donating recycled confetti strips for the celebration. They say parades these days are much more environmentally friendly than ticker-tapes of the past.
“What we’re doing here today is taking 1,200 pounds of shredded, recycled paper to be delivered to the buildings of Lower Manhattan to start the process of what kind of paper should be thrown from the windows tomorrow. It will all be cleaned up by the sanitation department and recycled yet again. So this is going to be a green parade,” said John Cioffi of Atlas Materials.
The Yankees won their 27th World Championship Wednesday night in the Bronx with a 7-3 win over the Phillies in game 6.
Street Closures
• Beginning at 8:00 a.m. Friday, streets in the vicinity of the parade formation area will be closed to prepare for the parade. These streets include Battery Place from Thames Street to Little West Street. Other street closures around Battery Park will include Battery Place between Broadway and West Streets and Greenwich Street north of Battery Place. On the east side of Battery Park, State Street will also be closed down to Water Street.
• Also beginning at 9:00 a.m., streets in the area of City Hall will start to be closed. These streets include Chambers Street from Church to Centre Streets and Park Row from Broadway to Centre Street.
• Starting at 10:30 a.m., the parade route on Broadway from Battery Park to Worth Street will be closed. Additionally, other streets in the area may be closed as needed. Businesses in lower Manhattan should plan accordingly, including rescheduling deliveries. Parking will be prohibited on Broadway and surrounding streets beginning Thursday evening.
Pedestrian Crossings
Pedestrian crossings will be located at the following intersections on Broadway:
• Reade Street
• Fulton Street
• Cortlandt Street/ Maiden Lane
• Cedar Street
• Rector Street (Westbound pedestrians only)
• Wall Street (Westbound pedestrians only)
• Exchange Alley (Eastbound pedestrians only)
Additional pedestrian crossings will be established at the following locations:
• Battery Place and West Street (Eastbound pedestrians only)
• Lafayette and Reade Streets
