Two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip late on Friday failed to cross into Israel, landing within the Hamas-controlled enclave.

The launches triggered alert sirens in southern Israel, forcing Israelis to run for cover. The attack came hours after a Palestinian was killed and more than 54 were injured by Israel Defense Forces fire during protests along the border, i24 reported. The source of the figures was the Gaza Health Ministry, according to the report.

Around 5,800 protesters and rioters gathered along the security barrier on Friday, in a repeat of a confrontation that has continued at the border for months. Palestinians regularly fire rockets and improvised explosive devices at the IDF during these riots. The riots are part of Hamas’s “Great March of Return” movement that seeks to force a “right of return” of Palestinians to Israel.
