Four people were killed and several others injured in a mass shooting during a birthday party late last night in Dadeville, Alabama, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement Sunday morning.

“We can confirm that it was tied to a birthday celebration,” Sgt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama State Troopers said during a news conference Sunday morning. “The investigation will be a long and complicated process.”

The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday near Broadnax Street, Burkett said. He didn’t provide the ages of anyone involved.

The ALEA and the State Bureau of Investigations have launched an investigation at the request of the Dadeville Police Chief. Dadeville is in Tallapoosa County, about 50 miles northeast of Montgomery.

Dadeville Police and the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office have been tight-lipped about providing information to the media. Burkett will be holding another news conference later in the day.

Burkett told local media that the scene is safe and there is no risk to the public at this time, and asked for people to provide them with tips via phone or email.

Superintendent Raymond Porter said schools in the area will be providing counseling to children on Monday.

“This [incident] does not represent our children, and who we are as a community,” Porter said at the news conference.

State officials issued statements on the shooting.

“This morning, I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians. Violent crime has NO place in our state, and we are staying closely updated by law enforcement as details emerge,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) said on Twitter.

President Biden has been briefed on the shooting in Dadeville, according to a note from his team. He and the White House are monitoring the situation and have been in contact with law enforcement officers and local officials to offer support, per the president’s team.

Dadeville has a population of 3,000 that is about 51 percent Black and 48 percent White, recent census data shows. The city is known to locals as the “Heart of Lake Martin” – a man-made lake with a hydroelectric dam completed in 1929, according to the city’s official website.

The gun violence in Dadeville is the latest of a staggering number of mass shootings that have ravaged the nation and have left an immense toll this year alone.

Less than four months into 2023, there have been 163 mass shootings that have killed 228 people and injured 638, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks shootings in which four or more people, not including the shooter, are injured or killed.

Mass shootings have averaged more than one per day in 2023, according to the archive. Just on Saturday, including Dadeville, there were nine mass shootings in the United States, the archive shows.

In one of Saturday’s other mass shootings, two people were killed and four others injured in Louisville. The shooting occurred at Chickasaw Park where hundreds of people were gathered around 9 p.m., said Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey of the Louisville Police Department. The city of Louisville is still shaken from a mass shooting at the Old National Bank last week that left five victims and the shooter dead.

On Sunday morning in Dadeville, the community reeled.
