It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Hertzel Schechter zt”l of Yerushalayim.
Reb Hertzel was a talmid chochom and a marbitz Torah, teaching at Aish Hatorah and elsewhere.
A Talmid of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, Reb Hertzel was greatly impacted by the legendary Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz zt’’l.
He was a renowned baal menagein, who composed many beautiful niggunim. Many years ago, he composed and sang on an album called “Achdus” produced by Sheya Mendlowitz.
Perhaps Reb Hertzel’s most famous composition is Odcha Hashem Elokai, a song that is sung literally the world over in all Jewish communities.
Reb Hertzel was a man of sterling character, with impeccable middos tovos and a perpetual smile, spreading simchas hachaim and offering a good word and a gut vort to every person he met.
Reb Hertzel is survived by his wife, their children, Rabbi Avrohom Schechter, Rabbi Aryeh Schechter, Rabbi Shragi Schechter, Mrs. Rivky Green, Mrs. Devorah Klein and Mrs. Shulamis; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Rav Refoel Yitzchok Dovid Schechter zt”l of Lakewood.
