Following the publicity regarding the sale of stones from the Kosel on the eBay website, one of the stones was returned to the rov of the Kosel, Rav Shmuel Rabinovich.
Y.B., who returned the stone, told the stone’s story.
“I was a soldier in 1968, guarding Kever Rochel. One night, after Yerushalayim’s reunification, I arrived at the Kotel and observed the tractors working on the expansion of the plaza. I saw them expose stones of the Kotel which were covered up previously, when one of the tractors accidentally hit part of the Kotel with its shovel and a piece of rock fell off.
“I decided to take the piece of rock to decorate my home. I brought it with me to Beit Lechem and had an Arab framer frame the piece with olive wood.
“When my wife heard of the unfortunate episode with the website and saw the response of the rav of the Kotel, we understood that we must return the rock to the Kotel.”
Rav Rabinovich’s office said that they will try to find the origin of the stone and return the piece that fell off to its original place. If they cannot identify the correct initial spot, the stone will be buried like other stones that have fallen from the Kosel.
