Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday that whether or not he issues a presidential decree declaring Palestinian elections depends on Israel granting permission for eastern Jerusalem residents to participate.

Speaking during a dinner at the Franciscan Monastery in Bethlehem, Abbas said, “the Palestinian factions agreed on what we agree with, but one very important obstacle remained, namely, the holding of the elections in east Jerusalem,” according to the Xinhua news agency.

The Palestinian leader also said that legislative and presidential elections are needed “to restore democracy,” adding that “we cannot remain all this time without elections and without democracy.”

“We believe in democracy and believe in the liberation of Palestine soon,” he said.

  1. Can anyone explain what is stopping anyone from voting in any election? I am Canadian here in Canada, and if I happened to be anywhere in the world during a Canadian election I could simply mail in my mail-in vote. What does this Abbas really mean – is it that he wants polling stations open manned by non-Israelis?

  2. He wants Arab Israeli citizens to be able to vote in the Palestinian elections because that would imply that Arab Israeli areas are part of “Palestine.” What the Israeli government should do is agree to allow any Arab Israeli to forfeit their Israeli citizenship in order to vote and then deport them to “Palestine.”
