As a year full of confusion & unknown draws to a close, most will enter the warm familiar embrace of Chanukah. Illuminated by the glow of the menorah, we will be cozy at home, eating delicious foods and relishing in the age-old tradition of presents and dreidel. But as we sit with our loved ones, let us not forget about those who are less fortunate than us. As poverty and unemployment sweep the world, there are Jewish families who do not have access to working heaters. Some don’t even have enough food.

This year, the Vaad HaRabbanim is doing something to change that. The Vaad is going all out to spread some Chanukah light for these struggling families. Families with young children in need will receive food packages, covered flights for life-saving medical treatments, and some “Chanukah gelt” to help cover needs such as electricity and heating.

As an incentive, the Vaad will be giving the name of every person who donates $36 or more to gedolei hador who will personally daven for them as they light the menorah. These include Rav Chaim Kanievsky, the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, and R’ Yitzchol Zilberstein.

In addition, donors of $180 or more will also be prayed for every single night of Chanukah at mekomos kedoshos such as the Kosel, Meron, Amukah, and the kever of R’ Yehuda Bar Ilai.
