Argentina’s President-elect, Javier Milei, confirmed on Monday that he plans to visit both Israel and the United States before his December 10 inauguration. Describing these trips as “spiritual,” Milei expressed his intention to meet with rabbis whom he consulted during the election.

Milei, a self-described libertarian, secured a landslide victory over the current Minister of Economics, Sergio Massa, on Sunday. Massa’s tenure has been marred by significant economic challenges, including inflation exceeding 140 percent, soaring poverty, and joblessness levels, along with the worst economic crisis in Argentina’s history. Milei has outlined his plans to adopt the U.S. dollar as the official currency, drastically cut government spending through agency elimination or privatization, and eliminate the Argentine Central Bank.

In terms of foreign policy, Milei pledged to shift away from the pro-Iran, pro-China stance of the current administration and its socialist predecessors. Under his leadership, Milei emphasizes that Israel and the United States will be Argentina’s primary allies. Milei’s ties with the Jewish community have been evident, including his study of the Torah, consideration of conversion to Judaism, and regular interactions with multiple rabbis.

Milei’s support for Israel, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7th terrorist attacks by Hamas, represents a notable departure for Argentina. Historically, under socialist leadership, Argentina built significant ties with Iran. The former president and current vice president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, faced accusations of assisting Iran in protecting terrorists linked to a deadly 1994 attack in Buenos Aires. The Fernández de Kirchner administration allegedly rescinded Interpol demands to aid in the arrests of Iranian nationals involved in the bombing.

During the interview on Argentina’s Radio Mitre, Milei confirmed his upcoming trips to the United States and Israel. Highlighting the spiritual significance of these visits, he mentioned plans to meet friendly rabbis in New York and Miami before heading to Israel. Milei extended an invitation to the Israeli ambassador in Buenos Aires to join him.

These trips align with Milei’s campaign promises, emphasizing the importance of alliances with the United States and Israel. In an interview with La Nación, he pledged to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim.

Milei’s interest in studying the Torah, which began in 2021, is detailed in an extended profile with El País. While considering conversion, he expressed concerns about observing Shabbos as president. Milei credited Jewish prayers for providing him strength during an interview with Tucker Carlson in September, expressing gratitude for those praying for him at the Kosel in Israel. He affirmed his conviction in the pursuit of freedom, stating, “Life without freedom is not worth living.”
