A high-ranking official within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under President Joe Biden’s administration is unable to provide a definitive account of how many Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) the agency maintains communication with once they have been placed with adult sponsors in the United States. This matter was raised during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) inquired about a labor trafficking pipeline involving UACs that has surged during Biden’s tenure.
Earlier this year, the New York Times reported that a minimum of 85,000 UACs had lost contact with HHS authorities after being released to adult sponsors in the U.S. When asked about the precise number of UACs, out of the approximately 430,000 who have arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border during the Biden administration, that HHS officials currently maintain contact with, Robin Dunn Marcos, Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, was unable to furnish a figure.
The exchange between Hawley and Dunn Marcos unfolded as follows: HAWLEY: How many children, at this moment, out of the approximately 430,000 unaccompanied children who have crossed the border under this administration, which is an astounding figure, how many are you actively keeping in touch with right now? DUNN MARCOS: Senator, we collaborate with a variety of service providers across the nation… HAWLEY: But what is the number? How many are you in contact with? You mentioned that child welfare is your top priority, so what is the number? DUNN MARCOS: I don’t possess the specific number. HAWLEY: How can you not have that information? Why would you come to this hearing without knowing? … With all due respect, I would like to see you fulfill your responsibilities and refrain from releasing children into the hands of human traffickers. Respectfully, that’s my request. I would like you to prevent what could potentially be the largest child trafficking network in American history.
Similarly, Dunn Marcos disclosed to Hawley that background checks on adult sponsors are carried out in “certain instances” but not universally. The proportion of background checks conducted on all adults residing in the household of a UAC sponsor was not provided by Dunn Marcos either. “I do not have access to that data,” was her response when asked for this figure. Hawley pursued the matter further by asking, “Do you visit the homes in cases where you can physically inspect where these children are being placed, and who is responsible for their care?” To which Dunn Marcos replied, “We do not conduct home visits in all instances.”
There have been reports suggesting that prominent Biden administration figures, including HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and former Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice, have disregarded warnings about UACs becoming ensnared in a pervasive labor trafficking network, as well as falling prey to sex trafficking and general abuse at the hands of their adult sponsors.
As previously detailed by Breitbart News, Biden has witnessed a threefold increase in the influx of UACs into the United States, which has coincided with a surge in child migrant labor trafficking. During Biden’s first two years in office, nearly 300,000 UACs arrived at the border and were subsequently placed into the interior of the United States with adult sponsors.
In April, a whistleblower from HHS testified before Congress, cautioning that the agency is running a “multi-billion-dollar child trafficking operation,” in which UACs arrive at the border, are taken into Department of Homeland Security (DHS) custody, transferred to HHS, and then released to unvetted adult sponsors, the majority of whom are not their biological parents. The whistleblower asserted, “Some sponsors view children as commodities and assets to be used for earning income — this is why we are witnessing an explosion of labor trafficking.”
