US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking to CNN, indicated a potential shift in the sequence of events concerning the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, along with a proposed two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians, suggesting they could precede a ceasefire in Gaza.

Blinken expressed openness to the idea, stating, “Certainly that’s, that’s possible,” emphasizing the need for an end to the conflict in Gaza and progress towards resolving the Palestinian issue to realize such prospects.

Contrary to prior expectations, US officials had previously outlined that negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza must be concluded before advancing any broader regional initiatives.

In reference to the support extended to Israel following Iran’s April 13 aerial assault, Blinken highlighted the potential for Israel’s integration into the region with assistance from other nations in ensuring its defense.

However, Blinken underscored the necessity for the cessation of hostilities in Gaza and a clear pathway towards a Palestinian state for such a future, envisioning normal relations between Israel and regional countries as a longstanding aspiration fulfilled.

He mentioned ongoing efforts to facilitate normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, characterizing it as part of a significant endeavor to bring an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Blinken emphasized collaborative efforts with partners, including European allies, to advance the normalization process, aiming to transition from theoretical discussions to tangible progress.

Prior to Hamas’ October 7 attack and the subsequent Gaza conflict, Israel and Saudi Arabia had been seemingly progressing towards normalization.

Reports emerged during the Gaza conflict indicating that Saudi Arabia had temporarily suspended plans to normalize ties with Israel, a move confirmed by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, who expressed optimism for resuming talks post-conflict.

Recent statements from top Saudi officials reiterated the condition that normalization with Israel hinges on both the cessation of hostilities in Gaza and the establishment of a Palestinian state, a prerequisite consistently emphasized by Saudi authorities.

Blinken had previously remarked on the “good progress” made in discussions between the United States and Saudi Arabia regarding normalization with Israel, highlighting the potential for a historic agreement beneficial not only for the two nations but also for regional stability.
