Senator Bernie Sanders has voiced his support for the United States offering aid to Israel while emphasizing that these funds should not be employed in causing harm to “innocent” residents of the Gaza Strip.
With the death toll in Gaza rising, criticism regarding civilian casualties in the region has escalated, particularly within progressive circles. The approval of an anticipated new U.S. aid package for Israel has been hindered by partisan politics in Washington, D.C.
Senator Sanders, a progressive independent who twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, urged President Joe Biden and Congress on Monday to send a clear message to Israel that any U.S. aid it receives must not be used to harm civilians in Gaza. The senator, who is Jewish, also emphasized that Israel had the right to combat Hamas terrorism.
“The U.S. provides $3.8 billion a year to Israel,” Sanders wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “The Biden administration and Congress must make it clear. Israel has the right to defend itself and destroy Hamas terrorism, but it does not have the right to use U.S. dollars to kill thousands of innocent men, women, and children in Gaza.”
In a statement calling for a “humanitarian pause” on the conflict last week, Sanders said that “the American people have a right to know” if additional U.S. aid to Israel will “be used to defend Israel or whether it will be used for an invasion and occupation.”
“I have serious concerns about what this invasion and potential occupation of Gaza will mean, both in terms of the long-term security of Israel and the well-being of the Palestinian residents of Gaza,” Sanders said.
Last week, in a statement calling for a “humanitarian pause” in the conflict, Sanders raised questions about the intended use of additional U.S. aid to Israel. He wondered if it would be employed for defensive purposes or for an invasion and occupation.
Sanders expressed serious concerns regarding the consequences of an invasion and potential occupation of Gaza, both in terms of Israel’s long-term security and the well-being of Palestinian residents in Gaza. He criticized what he saw as “indiscriminate warfare” by Israel against Gaza civilians and urged addressing the “growing humanitarian catastrophe.”
The senator stressed that killing innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza would not bring back the innocent Israeli lives lost, but would only exacerbate an already dire situation.
He added, “Innocent Palestinians also have a right to life, security, and peace. Hamas is an authoritarian organization that does not necessarily represent a broad segment of the Palestinian population, and we must not conflate all Palestinians with this terrorist organization.”

Israel already does more than any other country as far as protecting non-combatants. This includes:
-Not attacking legitimate targets, such as the Hamas headquarters under a hospital, because of Hamas’ use of human shields.
-Actually making phone calls to civilians in advance of attacks warning them to evacuate.
-Dropping “rook knocker” bombs on targeted buildings before their destruction so inhabitants can escape.
-Calling off attacks on key Hamas leaders when civilians are spotted nearby.
Despite these and other measures, Gaza civilians have died and will die. Those whose deaths are because of Hamas members hiding among them and using them as human shields are 100% Hamas’ responsibility by the laws of war. If Bernie Sanders and other hard-left critics of Israel’s military have any brilliant ideas as to how Israel can attack the bloodthirsty mass-murdering terrorists of Hamas without harming the Gaza civilians they use as human shields, I’m sure Israel would love to hear them.
