Pete Buttigieg is dropping his presidential bid after a disappointing showing in South Carolina, ending a meteoric rise that saw the once-obscure former mayor of South Bend, Ind., beat out several bigger-name rivals in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Buttigieg is on his way to South Bend, where he will make the announcement later tonight.

The then-mayor launched his campaign last April, touting a unifying message and the promise of generational change in Washington. He also sought to attract moderate voters of all stripes, often talking about his conversations wooing “future former Republicans.”

  1. It makes no sense that he didn’t wait two days for the outcome of Super Tuesday

He must have done it so abruptly now for one of two reasons.

(1)One of the other contenders made a private deal with him. Drop out now and I will … for you.

(2)The strain of race was really getting to him on a personal level. He just didn’t have the strength to continue particularly when doing so carried the risk of a major humiliating defeat for him

  2. I wasn’t expecting him to quit so quickly. To’eivah aside, he had arguably the most intelligent voice in the pre-Bloomberg pack.

It’s a shame he didn’t use his social abilities for goodness instead of evil.

    • He clearly is smart, but what struck me more than anything was his smoothness. He is a slick, skilled debater, fast thinking, fully in control of his facial expressions and body language, far more than any other candidate on stage. He actually reminds me of John Edwards (remember him?) back in 2004.
