New NASA observations show that, last month, when a 200,000-mile filament of solar material crashed and tore into the sun, it carved an apparent “canyon” filled with fire into the sun’s surface.
Researchers pieced together a video of the canyon-like feature from images collected from the Goddard Space Flight Center’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. The canyon is apparently a channel where magnetic fields held up a filament of plasma before exploding. Read more at Space.com.
