Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) conveyed his confidence in President Joe Biden’s strategy to mitigate civilian casualties in Gaza, endorsing the decision to pause the delivery of 3,500 bombs to Israel.
“I believe that Israel and America have an ironclad relationship, and I have faith in what the Biden administration is doing,” Schumer said when asked if it is appropriate for the Biden administration to hold up the shipment of bombs, according to The Hill.
His remarks followed acknowledgments from US officials that a shipment of bombs to Israel had been halted due to concerns over a potential escalation of conflict in the Gaza city of Rafah.
The suspended shipment included 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs, with US authorities particularly concerned about the larger munitions and their potential impact in densely populated urban areas.
While Schumer has voiced criticisms of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing him as an obstacle to peace and advocating for elections in Israel, he has emphasized the importance of the US providing Israel with the necessary support for self-defense.
On the opposing side, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Mike Johnson urged President Biden in a letter to expedite congressionally allocated security aid to Israel.
Additionally, US Senator Lindsey Graham questioned Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Charles Q. Brown Jr. regarding the Biden administration’s decision to suspend an arms shipment to Israel, raising historical questions such as the use of atomic bombs in World War II.
“If we stop weapons necessary to destroy the enemies of the State of Israel at a time of great peril, we will pay a price. This is obscene. It is absurd. Give Israel what they need to fight the war. They can’t afford to lose. This is Hiroshima and Nagasaki on steroids,” Graham warned.
