Cases of the new coronavirus strain spreading rapidly in the UK have been confirmed in Denmark, Italy, Gibraltar, the Netherlands and Australia.
France and South Africa also believe they have cases of the mutation – known as VUI-202012/01 – but these have not been confirmed.
French health minister Olivier Veran said it is “entirely possible” the new variant is already circulating in France, but no cases have been officially identified yet.
First detected in London and the South East earlier this month, it is up to 70% more infectious than the original strain because it has a much bigger viral load.

Nick Triggle Health Correspondent The latest hospital occupancy data has been published in England. It shows in the week ending 13 December, 89% of beds were occupied, leaving 10,500 empty beds.
That means hospitals were actually busier this time last year, when 95% of beds were occupied.
Coronavirus is a common virus. Look at any bottle of Lysol spray and it says it kills cornavirus. It’s the virus that causes the common cold. Of course there are going to be multiple strains of it. It’s happened before and it will happen in the future.
This virus has a 99.7% recovery rate. Just like the flu. It’s going to be a common yearly virus. Once long-term safety of the vaccine is proven, we’re just going to be reminded every year to take the “flu-and-corona” shot.
